6. Do back belts prevent back injuries? Research does not support their effectiveness. Back belts may distract the employee from focusing on good technique and promote the sense that the person can lift more than they should, creating a false sense of security. Back belts do not prevent awkward postures such as twisting the low back or rounded lumbar spine.
The following quote can be found on page 518 of "Kodak's Ergonomic Design for People at Work", second edition, John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Hoboken, New Jersey, 2004. : "Studies on the value of back belts in preventing injuries to the back have been inconclusive, but it is generally accepted that they are not protective equipment and should not be used in place of ergonomic interventions to improving lifting tasks".
The most reliable techniques to prevent low back injury are: Do not round the back - keep an inward low back curve throughout the entire lift. Keep the load close to the body. Do not twist or rotate the back. Use equipment and get help for heavier lifts.
